Teshekpuk Lake Observatory

Teshekpuk Lake. Links to larger image. The name Teshekpuk derives from an Inupiaq word meaning "big coastal lake" or "the largest lake of all". Indeed, Teshekpuk Lake is the largest lake in Arctic Alaska, the third largest lake in the state, and possibly the largest thermokarst lake on Earth. In spite of its size and its ecological importance very little is known about the history, integrity, and health of this limnological system. Given future sea-level rise projections, rapid migration of the Beaufort Sea coastline, climate change impacts to lake ecosystems and uncertain responses by fish and waterfowl, as well as the potential for oil and gas development in the watershed, it is critical to gain a better understanding of this unique ecosystem.

Through a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey—Alaska Science Center, the BLM Arctic Field Office, the National Science Foundation, and a number of other partners we have established the Teshekpuk Lake Observatory (TLO) in order to assess the past, present, and future response of Teshekpuk Lake and the surrounding landscape and ecosystem to environmental stressors and change.

For more information about the TLO, please contact Benjamin Jones (bjones@usgs.gov).
