USGS Arkansas Water Science Center Activities in the Fayetteville Shale Area

  • The USGS is constructing a comprehensive watershed model to understand the effects of natural gas development on the quantity and quality of water flowing through Cypress Creek.

  • The objective of this project is to:
  • Simulate the hydrologic and sedimentation process that proposed impoundments used as water supply ponds for gas extraction operations in the upper Cypress Creek watershed will have on the streamflow of Cypress Creek.

A watershed model is being developed and calibrated for the 24 square mile drainage area of Cypress Creek upstream from the USGS streamflow gaging station at Highway 9. In addition to developing a watershed model, water-quality data are being collected during base-flow and storm-flow conditions and being used for model calibration.

The collection of these data are necessary to account for the natural seasonal variations that occur on Cypress Creek and Brewer Lake, all of which must be accounted for when calibrating the model.

This study will be completed in a 2.5-year timeframe (the data collection efforts will be completed in a 2-year timeframe; watershed model will require 2.5 years to complete).
