EUSE: Effects of Urbanization on Stream Ecology

The Sacramento River Basin NAWQA study unit has been chosen to participate in a topical study entitled the "Effects of Urbanization on Stream Ecosystems" Up to 25 to 30 small streams, at various levels of urban density within the Sacramento metropolitan area, will be selected for detailed ecological analysis. The goal of the study will be to examine the effects of urban density on stream ecosystems, and how the ecosystem responds to changes induced by population growth and changing land use. Planning for the study will begin in October 2006, and data collection activities will start the following year. Data collection activities have been completed, or are in progress, for 15 other major metropolitan areas across the United States, and the Sacramento area will be one of four new areas to initiate studies.

Preliminary information on the results of this topical study for the initial set of 15 metropolitan areas, and some general information about the goal of this topical study, is available here.
