Sonar Bathymetry: Task 1: Mapping, Tampa Bay Study
An accurate and modern bathymetric map was one of the most crucial data sets for Tampa Bay managers and scientists alike. Through the Tampa Bay Study, a current bathymetric survey of Tampa Bay has been processed and finalized. Scientists can these data for multiple research objectives, including seagrass recovery, circulation modeling, and sediment-transport modeling. In addition, modern bathymetry can be compared to historic data to better understand sedimentation rates and the impacts of bottom alterations.

Using bathymetry data and elevation data, a full topographic-bathymetric (topobathy) model of Tampa Bay was developed as a joint effort between National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the USGS. A topobathy model is an important data set for storm surge modeling, urban planning, and flood evacuation planning. The USGS topographic-bathymetric data acquired during the Tampa Bay Study has been used to update the existing topobathy model, providing improved accuracy and resolution.
