Harrison County Ground-Water Monitoring

Project Chief: Jeannie Barlow

The USGS collects water-quality samples from about 25 wells (of an approximately 100-well network), annually in order to determine and evaluate the ground-water resources of Harrison County, Mississippi. Since 1997, water samples have been collected at selected wells screened in the Citronelle, Graham Ferry, Pascagoula, Hattiesburg, and Catahoula Sandstone aquifers and are analyzed for field properties (temperature, pH, specific conductivity, and color), total dissolved solids, chloride, iron, and manganese. Water levels are also measured at the wells to determine long-term water-level trends in the aquifers. The resulting information forms the foundation for many of the area's water-resources management and planning activities and allows for the early detection of possible problems for example, saltwater intrusion and contamination.

The map below shows the area in which wells are sampled as part of this project. To see the well locations, zoom to an area of interest and press the "Show All Wells" button. To access individual well data, select a well and then click on the link to access water-quality and water-level data. Press the "Clear Wells" button to clear all wells from the map and the "Reset Map" button to return to the original map extent.
