Implementation and Testing of Early Warning System in the Passaic River Basin

Project Title: Implementation and Testing of Early Warning System in the Passaic River Basin
Project Number: 2454BSE
Project Chief:
Project Start Ddate: 01-OCT-2004
Project End Date: 28-FEB-2008

Project Objectives

The objectives of this collaborative effort are to lay the ground work for developing an EWS field site at an operating water utility by deploying an array of water quality sensors to characterize baseline water quality variability at the intake and within the distribution system.

Statement of Problem

The USGS in cooperation with the USEPA, the Passaic Valley Water Supply Commission (PVWC) and the New Jersey American Water Company initiated a pilot EWS. The pilot included the establishment of real time water quality sampling stations at the intakes and in the distribution system of both purveyors. The stations have been in operation for approximately nine (9) months. The initial phase of the project was scheduled to end September 30, 2004. The purpose of this proposal is to continue sampling at two sites, the source water and distribution sampling, at the PVWC facility for an additional year.

Strategy and Approach

  1. Continue the monitoring and maintenance of stations at the PVWC intake (source water) and at a distribution site for approximately 12 months.
  2. Continue to provide a web site for review of the data.
  3. Analyze data and establish a baseline.
  4. Attempt to develop simple statistics that would show a significant change from the baseline.
