Historic Bathymetry Maps and Bathymetry Change Maps of San Publo Bay

Select a pair of years to see the bathymetry maps for each year and the change map which shows the difference between those two years.

1856 and 1887 -- Massive quantities of sediment released by hydraulic gold mining in the Sierra Foothills overwhelmed San Pablo Bay.

1887 and 1898 -- Hydraulic mining debris continued to be deposited (at a slowed rate) in San Pablo Bay.

1898 and 1922 -- San Pablo Bay continued to fill with sediment.

1922 and 1951 -- Sedimentation was approximately the same as the preceding 20 years.

1951 and 1983 -- San Pablo Bay lost sediment during this period.

Net sediment gain to San Pablo Bay over the entire period (1856 - 1983) was 389 million cubic meters.
