Satellite Image of the Colorado Plateau

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Southwest Geographic Science Team (SGST), a part of the Geography Discipline, represents an integration of expertise focused on research and development of methods related to a wide variety of earth science issues and applications.The SGST in Arizona, with locations in Flagstaff and Tucson, encompasses staff with expertise and experience in a variety of scientific and technology-related topics and interests, including the image processing and analysis of multispectral satellite and airborne imagery, geospatial analysis, phenological studies, and the design, development, and implementation of large databases and associated web applications and interfaces.

Activities at both offices are primarily focused on the Southwest, but often extend throughout the United States and occasionally into international landscapes. Most projects are related to landscape characterization and subsequent environmental and human health impacts. The following are examples of current projects conducted by the Arizona SGST:
