- Title: Florida Bay Surface Maps
- Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: maps
- Online_Linkage: <https://sofia.usgs.gov/projects/geo_monitor/maps/mps-surfaces/>
- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
The maps show the surface temperatures, salinities, pH, and dissolved oxygen for February and April 2002
- Purpose:
-
The production and transport of biogenic carbonate sediments play a key role in developing mud banks and altering circulation patterns in Florida Bay. Accurate measurements of sediment accumulation and production rates are required to determine how these processes have changed during the last century in response to anthropogenic influences. Estimates of sediment accumulation rates and annual production rates based on standing crop and turnover of various calcifying species are available from previous research. Carbonate sedimentation and organic productivity (calcification, photosynthesis, and respiration) are most effectively determined from precise, in situ measurements of alkalinity, pH, temperature, conductivity, and air:sea CO2 and O2 gas fluxes.

Value labels shown on the maps depict selected surface measurements for temperature, salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen along the sampling path. Each sampling site and time used a different number of data points in preparation of the maps. See the individual maps for the number of data points.
