Abstract:
Beginning in September 2011, water-quality surveys were conducted a minimum of six times per year in the tidal Caloosahatchee River and surrounding estuaries. Geo-referenced measurements were made at 5 second intervals during moving boat surveys in order to create high resolution water-quality maps of the study area. Water-quality characteristics measured and recorded include salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and turbidity as well as FDOM data.
Purpose:
The objective of this project is to describe seasonal changes in the spatial distribution of selected water-quality characteristics within the tidal reach of the Caloosahatchee River and surrounding estuaries

Process_Description:
Moving-boat surveys are used to produce water-quality maps at least four times per year. The boat surveys typically began at the boat ramp near Punta Rassa, enter San Carlos Bay, extend around Pine Island, continue upstream along the Caloosahatchee River, and end at the W. P. Franklin Lock and Dam (S-79). Sensor and coordinate data are recorded as the boat travels throughout the study area making measurements using a flow-through onboard pump system. Salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and turbidity data are recorded at 5-second intervals. Sensors are calibrated prior to each survey following procedures described in Wagner and others (2006). Data is processed and reviewed using procedures outlined in Soderqvist and Patino (2010). Water quality maps are created using the ESRI ArcMap GIS program. Maps and data in table format can be retrieved by date of survey and parameter. Fluorescence of chromoorphic dissolved organic matter (FDOM) data are recorded at 15-second intervals. FDOM is recorded as relative fluorescence units, corrected for temperature and turbidity with equations from Downing and others (2012), and converted to parts per billion (ppb) quinine sulfate equivalents units (QSE). After conversion, a correction is applied to account for inner filter effects using absorbance at 254 nanometers (A254) (Downing and others, 2012).
