Abstract:
This study provided the first database of the relative abundance, life histories, ecology, and standing stocks of the two crayfish species in several habitat types from south Florida. The empirical data are the first available for the two species that inhabit southern Florida, making them scientifically valuable. We have used a retrospective analysis of archived samples to show that P. fallax and P. alleni distributions and abundances are dynamically related to the hydrological conditions of an area. This fact makes crayfish distribution a good predictor for use in the restoration, and will be used as a performance measure.
Purpose:
The original proposal to study the Everglades crayfish (Procambarus alleni) was of limited scope that included the collection of density and biomass data for the crayfish across a hydrological gradient. A dramatic finding was the recognition of a second species of crayfish, Procambarus fallax, in the study marshes. This species was previously known to range southward only into Palm Beach County. It was overlooked or misidentified in previous studies. We expanded the study to (1) obtain seasonal abundance information in habitats spanning a hydrological gradient in Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve; (2) describe life-history parameters pertinent to Across Trophic Level System Simulation (ATLSS) modeling, including burrowing seasonality, fecundity, growth, and diet, of each species; (3) study the interspecific interactions that explain the distributional patterns evident from field sampling through mesocosm experiments; (4) and use the data to create simulation models of crayfish distribution and dynamics in the system to evaluate restoration actions.

Archived collections of crayfish dating from the early 1980s were analyzed to determine if P. Fallax had been present in Everglades National Park for decades or if it was a recent immigrant to the ecosystem.

Sampling sites that typify wet and dry conditions in the ENP and Big Cypress National Preserve (BICY) were chosen to study the present spatial distribution of the crayfish. Sites were chosen based on vegetation composition and substrate type as indicators of hydrologic conditions. Each study site was located within several kilometers of a continuous hydrologic monitoring station. We estimated the hydroperiod (duration of innundation) using continuous stage data and local depth measurements. Short-hydroperiod sites were defined as those flooded less than nine months per year, intermediate as flooded from nine to ten months, and long-hydroperiod locations as flooded from eleven to twelve months. The four general sampling locations were the Rocky Glades, East Slough, Raccoon Point, and Shark Slough.

We collected crayfish primarily in throw traps (methods described by Loftus and Eklund 1994), which actively enclose approximately 1m2 of substrate. However, at locations where this method was not suitable, such as Rocky Glades site, we used Gee cylindrical funnel traps.

Spatially, we analyzed composition from three sites ranging in hydroperiod from eleven to twelve months. We sampled four plots in East Slough, four plots in Shark Slough, and three plots in Raccoon Point to test for a correlation between hydroperiod (the number of days flooded) and species relative abundance across the landscape. Hydroperiod was calculated by regressing local water depth to a continuous hydrologic monitoring station (East Slough- 205, Raccoon Point-BCA5, Shark Slough-P33) on each date of sampling. Hydroperiod of all sites was determined from November 1995 to November 1996. After arcsine-transforming the ratio of P. fallax density to total crayfish density, we calculated the Pearson product moment correlation between hydroperiod and P. fallax relative abundance.

Temporally, we examined archived throw-trap samples collected from 1985 to 1997 in central Shark Slough. Additionally, by reviewing those archived samples, we could determine if P. fallax was a longstanding member of the community or a recent immigrant. Because pigment patterns were lost by both species in alcohol preservative, we examined male pleopod morphology (see Hobbs 1942), assuming that male relative abundance is an index of species relative abundance. We determined local water depth and hydroperiod using a regression relationship generated between a nearby, continuous depth gauge (P-33) and a depth gauge at the collection site. After arcsine-transforming the proportion of P. fallax males to total males, we calculated the Pearson product-moment correlation between number of wet days and proportion of P. fallax males.
