Abstract:
The current scope of work will continue operation and maintenance of 25 gaging stations and will implement the hydrologic tools to support biological and ecological assessments of the impacts of the restoration plan for the greater Everglades.

Evapotranspiration and rainfall data are available for 253 sites in Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades National Park, Florida Bay, Gulf of Mexico, Pennsuco Wetlands, and Water Conservation Areas 1, 2, and 3. The data are available as zipped files by area and in sets of data from 1995-2009 for Evapotranspiration data and from 2002 - 2010 for rainfall data.

Purpose:
Water-level gages provide information for EDEN interpolations of daily water stage that provide spatially-explicit hydrologic predictions necessary for modeling floral and faunal habitat suitability and distributions across the entire Everglades. These models are critical for evaluations of alternative Everglades restoration plans and monitoring of the habitat impacts of surface hydrologic dynamics.

Rainfall data were compiled for all the Eden gage locations from the 15-minute NEXRAD data provided by the SFWMD. The precision for the gage-adjusted radar is considered to be the same as standard rain-gage precision which is typically reported to the nearest 1/100th of an inch. Because the radar is adjusted to agree with the rain gage, the precision for the rain gage used is the governing precision at 1/100th inch (written communication, Baxter Vieux). Daily gage-adjusted rainfall values were computed for the South Florida Water Management District by OneRain, Inc (www.onerain.com) from January 2002 to October 2007. Starting November 1, 2007, these data are provided by Vieux. Inc (www.vieuxinc.com/rainvieux.html).

Within approximately 45 days after the end of each month quality-assured EOM data for grid cells in the EDEN project domain for the month are received from SFWMD. Daily rainfall data (in inches) for EDEN gage locations are compiled from the EOM data and assembled into Excel spreadsheets by area. This compilation of data is updated when additional data is provided by the SFWMD.

EDEN staff receives Evapotranspiration (ET) data annually from the USGS approximately six months after the end of the calendar year. Daily Potential Evapotranspiration (PET) values (in millimeters) are extrapolated by location for each of the EDEN water level stations and assembled into Excel spreadsheets organized by area.

The end-of-month (EOM) files use additional 81 rain gage data not available real-time with a proprietary algorithm to adjust radar rainfall values. Rainfall data are available from 2002 - 9/30/2010.

ET data are available from 1995 -12/31/2009.

Data for many gages in the EDEN network are referenced to NGVD29 by the operating agencies. When posted to EDENweb, they have been converted to NAVD88 using the conversion value documented on the station information page. Some gages operated by the USGS have not yet been converted to NAVD88.

Users should take careful note of the referenced vertical datum in order to make valid data comparisons.
