Abstract:
The Tamiami Trail series of measurement sections and gages are the only long term monitoring of flows across the entire width of the Everglades. Flow monitoring is critical to understanding the flows through the Everglades and into the Everglades National Park and Big Cypress Preserve which is a primary goal of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) and the Greater Everglades Priority Ecosystem Science program (GE PES). The data record covers a long time period which is an important aspect of understanding the flow quantities and distributions within the Everglades and to Shark River Slough and Lostmans Slough, the major flow ways to the estuaries. Ongoing and planned projects, such as the Modified Water Deliveries, the Tamiami Trail Bridge Modifications Project and the Decompartmentalization project, among many others, require these data sets in order to adequately evaluate the effects of restoration efforts on flow quantities, timing, and distribution.
Purpose:
The project will continue flow measurements, water level data collection, rating refinement and calibration of the discharge ratings at the three culvert and bridge stations and the four gated structures to produce continuous records of water levels and flow through the Tamiami Trail into the Big Cypress Preserve and the Everglades National Park. Provisional discharge measurements and data records will continue to be analyzed, processed and forwarded to the USACE and ENP for evaluation of the effects of structure operations on flows into the Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve. Final quality assured water-level and flow to be published in the publication Water-Data Report 2012 and available on NWISWeb.

Flow and water level monitoring, rating calibration, analysis, processing, and publication of continuous stage and discharge data.

Work to be undertaken and a decription of the methods and procedures:

1). Continue measuring flows, recording continuous water levels, and rating calibration of the discharge ratings at the three culvert stations throughout the range of flow conditions, hydro-periods, and structure operations to produce continuous discharge record.

2). Continue measuring flows, recording continuous water levels, and rating calibration of the discharge ratings at the four gated S-12 stations (A-D) throughout the range of flow conditions, hydro-periods, and structure operations to produce continuous discharge record.

3). Two stations updated with telemetry for the public release of real-time data. The last station is pending approval.

4). Provide provisional real-time and historical daily mean data on NWISWeb.

5). Data quality assurance reviews will continue throughout the water year culminating in the publication of daily mean water levels and discharge for these sites in the USGS report entitled, Water-Data Report 2012. Efforts to provide information to appropriate electronic outlets will continue.

USGS stream gage data are recorded for the following 7 sites near the Tamiami Trail in the Greater Everglades: 1) USGS 02288800 - Tamiami Canal Outlets, Monroe to Carnestown FL; 2) USGS 02288900 - Tamiami Canal Outlets, 40-Mile Bend to Monroe FL; 3) USGS 00289060 - Tamiami Canal Outlets, L-30 to L-67A near Miami FL; 4) USGS 254543080491101 - Tamiami Canal at S-12-A near Miami FL; 5) USGS 02289019 - Tamiami Canal at S-12-B near Miami, FL; 6) USGS 02289041 - Tamiami Canal Below S-12-C near Miami, FL; 7) USGS 254543080405401 - Tamiami Canal at S-12-D near Miami, FL.

Daily, monthly, and annual time-series data and statistics are available for Discharge (cubic feet per second), Gage height (ft, Published), and Stream water level elevation above NAVD 1988 (ft). Gage height and Stream water level may be measured Upstream and/or Downstream. Select sites also contain data for Specific Conductance (uS/cm at 25 degC), Water Temperature (degC) and Turbidity (IR LED light, det ang 90 deg FNU).
