Abstract:
Spatially continuous daily interpolations of water depth across the greater Everglades are computed by subtracting the EDEN ground-elevation model (Version October 2011) from the EDEN daily water-level surfaces for the period. The daily water-level surfaces were generated using the EDEN surface-water model, version 2. Water-depth surfaces are presented in centimeters and are served on the web in one of two formats, netcdf files and jpeg images.
Purpose:
Spatially explicit hydrologic information can be critical in understanding and predicting changes in biotic communities in wetland ecosystems. Repeated field measurements, the traditional method of collecting water surface information, is labor intensive and doesn't produce spatially continuous data across large areas. For this reason, the EDEN project was initiated to compile data from over 200 real-time water-level monitoring gages and to use the daily gage data to generate daily water-level and water-depth surfaces for the freshwater part of the Everglades.

Process_Description:
Computation of daily water-depth surfaces for the freshwater part of the greater Everglades: The EDEN daily water-depth surfaces are generated by subtracting the EDEN ground-elevation model (version October 2011) from the EDEN daily water-level surfaces. The water-depth surfaces are gridded to 400-square meters using the same grid as the water-level surfaces.

Each day, the EDEN water-surface model (version 2) is run to produce daily water-level surfaces using data from the EDEN network of water-level gages. The model was modified in November 2014 to produce daily water-depth surfaces in addition to water-level surfaces.

A boundary data layer is used to clip the interpolated surface for the EDEN model domain. The interpolated surface is saved to an ESRI GRID with 400-square-meter cell resolution aligned to the EDEN GRID data layer. The modeled grid cell value is obtained from the interpolated surface by assigning to the modeled value that corresponds to the center position of the grid cell. Both the boundary data layer and the EDEN GRID are maintained by USGS, St Petersburg, Florida.

Interpolated surface GRID files for each day are converted to CF compliant netCDF files for archiving. The netCDF files collect 3 months of daily surfaces together in each file. The daily water-depth surfaces are also served on the web as jpeg image files for quick review and comparison by users.

When new or revised daily water-level surfaces are generated, new daily water-depth surfaces are computed.
