Abstract:
On June 1, 2016, a water-quality and algae survey was completed along the freshwater reach of the Caloosahatchee River, Florida, from Lake Okeechobee at Moore Haven Lock and Dam (S-77) to W. P. Franklin Lock and Dam (S-79). Geo-referenced measurements were made at 5 second and 1 minute intervals during the moving boat survey in order to create high resolution water-quality maps of the study area. Water-quality characteristics measured and recorded include specific conductance, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, Nitrate+Nitrite, as well as the presence of algae organisms.
Purpose:
The objective of this effort was to describe the spatial distribution of selected water-quality characteristics within the freshwater reach of the Caloosahatchee River, from Lake Okeechobee to W. P. Franklin Lock and Dam near the town of Olga. The data release associated with this site consists of: Data files in csv format (also excel spreadsheets format available) containing data for temperature, specific conductance, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrate+nitrite, and presence of algae organisms.

Algae samples were taken from the water-surface by dipping a 1-liter bottle, leaving 1 inch of air space at the top, iced on site and shipped overnight to the laboratory. Samples were observed and photographed using differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy with an Olympus BX51 research microscope at 200x or 400x magnification. Algae organisms were identified according to Rosen and St. Amand (2015).

Moving-boat surveys are a useful tool to produce water-quality maps of aquatic systems, covering large areas during a short period of time (Booth and others, 2014, Soderqvist and Patino, 2010, Byrne and Gabaldon, 2008). On June 1, 2016, a water-quality survey was completed along the freshwater reach of the Caloosahatchee River, from Lake Okeechobee at Moore Haven Lock and Dam (S-77) to W. P. Franklin Lock and Dam (S-79). Sensor and coordinate data were recorded as the boat traveled through the study area, making measurements using an onboard flow-through system. Water was collected using a brass thru-hull fitting on the underside of the boat, at approximately 1 ft depth. Specific conductance, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and turbidity data were recorded at 5-second intervals using a YSI EXO, while an optical nitrate sensor (Satlantic SUNA V2) was used to collect data on 1-minute intervals. Sensors were calibrated prior to the survey following procedures described in Wagner and others (2006) and Pellerin and others (2013). In addition to sensor data, discrete water samples were collected at 13 locations for nitrate+nitrite laboratory analyses and algae identification. Optical nitrate sensor data were compared to laboratory results to determine possible instrument bias and necessary calibration. Techniques and methods used are described by Pellerin and others (2013). The resultant calibration rating was used to adjust the sensor data and produce a corrected dataset of nitrate+nitrite, as nitrogen for the map presented.
