Project Investigator: Ann M. Foster

Project Start Date: 2014 End Date: 2014

Recent Funding: (FY14) USGS GE PES

This project will create a digital archive of 1928 photos flown by the U.S. Army Air Corps and compiled by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey along the coast of Florida.

The greater Everglades ecosystem has been the focus of a large effort to understand and restore the ecological functions of the River of Grass. The work has been ongoing for decades with the goal of ultimately improving 'society's understanding of the environment and assist in the sustainable use, protection, and restoration of the Everglades and other ecosystems within the region'. Developing restoration targets for the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan requires the type of spatially-explicit information about the structure of the ecosystem prior to extensive development that is represented by these photos. They represent one of the earliest records of the system prior to extensive impacts from development.

A digital archive of the last known collection of aerial photographs of the south Florida's coastline flown in the year 1928 will be compiled from photos in the possession of Dr. Hal Wanless (University of Miami) who has agreed to collaborate with the USGS on this project. These photos were flown by the U.S. Army Air Corps and compiled by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey along the coast of Florida. Only one set of these photos is known to remain.
