Overview & Objective(s):

EDEN, the Everglades Depth Estimation Network, is a RECOVER Monitoring and Assessment Plan effort funded by the USACE in 2005 through 2007. EDEN is an integrated network of real-time water-level monitoring, ground-elevation modeling, and water-surface modeling that provides scientists and managers with current (1999-present), on-line water-depth information for the greater Everglades. The target users are biologist and ecologist examining trophic level responses to hydrodynamic changes in the Everglades.

The current scope of work is operation and maintenance of 25 gaging stations, create daily water surfaces, and implement the hydrologic tools to support biological and ecological assessments of the impacts of the restoration plan for the greater Everglades.

Specific Relevance to Major Unanswered Questions and Information Needs Identified:

Water-level gages provide information for EDEN interpolations of daily water level that provide spatially-explicit hydrologic predictions necessary for modeling floral and faunal habitat suitability and distributions across the entire Everglades. These models are critical for evaluations of alternative Everglades restoration plans and monitoring of the habitat impacts of surface hydrologic dynamics.


In FY09, the EDEN project completely reevaluated and reconfigured its data management plan to handle the agency data from water-level gages, manage and process the data, and create daily water surfaces more efficiently and, in the future, with more automation. A simple regression gap-filling program was developed for filling data gaps in water-level data at gages prior to creating daily water-level surfaces. The program was automated for use with provisional (quarterly) and final (annual) data sets. Work is ongoing to use the program potentially for creation of real-time surfaces.

The EDEN ground surface digital elevation model (DEM) was revised in Water Conservation Area 1 and expanded to include the area south of BCNP. The surface water interpolation program was updated for new and revised datasets and expanded to include an area south of BCNP to the mangrove ecotone.

Rainfall and evapotranspiration data are updated regularly for the EDEN gage network and posted to the EDENweb.

The EDEN's primary deliverable and product continues to be the EDENweb (sofia.usgs.gov/eden); the project website that provides all data, results, documentation, and other project information for EDEN users.

Future Planning:

The EDEN project is planned for a 5-year renewal by the USACE for the period April 2010 through March 2014. The project will continue to create and post daily water-level surfaces on a real-time basis for Everglades investigators.
