What are the biological impacts of concern?

Part 4: Identifying Phosphorus Concentrations that will Protect the Everglades: A Flume Dosing Experiment

Southeast Environmental Research Center - Florida International University

Objective: Quantify water quality criteria for Everglades wetlands.

Method: Low-level P additions cause changes in system components.

Hypothesis: In situ P enrichment using flow-through flumes.

6 Working Groups provide an integrated approach.

Each channel is 100m long and 3m wide

1 control channel with no Phosphorus added and 3 treatment channels with 0.15, 0.5, and1.0 µM Phosphorus added.

Periphyton in Control and High-Dose Channels 2 months after Dosing.

Periphyton cover decreased in the high-dose channel but was not significantly different in the control.

The results of this study will provide valuable information to the Florida Environmental Regulatory Commission to aid in the assessment of a numerical value for the Class III water quality standard for Everglades Wetlands.
