Long Island Sound Research Conference
The Long Island Sound Research Conference was held November 13-14, 1998. Three regional (oral) papers were presented dealing with the bottom sedimentary environments (Harley Knebel), the bottom hydrodynamic regime (Rich Signell), and the distribution of selected contaminants (Marilyn ten Brink), as well as a poster exhibit outlining the benthic habitat/process studies in a detailed area (Larry Poppe). Larry Poppe and Chris Polloni also demonstrated the newly published CD-ROM, which contains most of the USGS data, the preliminary results, sidescan mosaics of all detailed areas, and data from other studies (such as the biology) which were not presented at the meeting. The CD-ROM was well received and over a hundred copies were distributed at the conference. Other USGS attendees at the meeting were Ellen Mecray and Brian Flynn; Ralph Lewis, the Connecticut State Geologist, also attended. Participants at the conference developed a preliminary outline for a Theme Section in the Journal of Coastal Research that will include synthesis papers on all aspects of our work and that of collaborators. The three-day conference demonstrated how USGS regional mapping acted as a focal point for understanding and uniting the diverse research efforts in this large coastal estuary.
