Fire Island Science Conference

On February 24, Bill Schwab was invited to present the results of USGS nearshore seafloor mapping efforts offshore of Fire Island National Seashore at the Fire Island Science Conference. This conference is an annual public forum sponsored by the National Park Service (NPS). Other speakers were from USGS Biological Resources Division (BRD), the Park Service, and various universities. Topics ranged from ticks to deer to coastal erosion. The presentations by Bill Schwab and Jim Allen (BRD, Boston) raised a large number of questions from the audience related to coastal-erosion mitigation plans proposed by the Corps of Engineers. There appears to be great interest from the NPS, academia, and the general public in hearing scientific analysis of the Corps' plans.
