Bob Halley and Gene Shinn gave talks at a Geological Society of America (GSA) Southeast Section meeting in Athens, Ga., in a special session called the Relevance of Ethics to the Geosciences. Because of the nature of the session and the environmental/ethical politics involved in the subjects, the papers were designed to highlight controversial enviro-political problems. And it worked. The talks were given to standing-room-only audiences.

Bob's talk was titled "It's phosphorite on Navassa: That's no guano." Gene's was "Water quality in the Florida Keys: Schizophrenia in Paradise." Later, Bob, Gene, and Harold Hudson (formerly USGS and now NOAA Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary) appeared on an on-campus radio interview, broadcast on the local NPR station. Bob and Gene spoke on the subjects of their presentations and Harold spoke on the restoration of ship grounding sites in the marine sanctuary.

Chuck Holmes, Marci Marot, Bob Morton, Jack Kindinger, Gene Shinn, Jim Flocks, and Don Hickey gave presentations at the AAPG/SEPM annual meeting in San Antonio. Holmes/Marot, Flocks/Kindinger, Kindinger/Morton/Flocks/Gregg Brooks (Eckerd College), and Hickey/Shinn presented poster papers. Gene gave an oral presentation on tidal pumping in the Florida Keys and received an Honorable Mention Award for last year's presentation, "Did dust do it?"
