Hein, J.R. and Morgan, C.L., 1999, Influence of substrate rocks on Fe-Mn crust composition: Deep-Sea Research I, v. 46, p. 855-875.

The long-held assumption that crusts do not acquire elements from the substrate rock on which they grow is finally proven to be true. The composition of crusts on phosphorite substrate rocks is distinctly different from crusts that grow on other substrate types only because crusts and substrates were mineralized by the same phosphogenic event. Diagenetic phosphatization of the crusts caused chemical reorganization of elements, including increases in some economically important elements such as Pt, Zn, Cu, V, P, and Mo and decreases in Fe and Si.
