Nancy Soderberg and Barb Seekins (WHFC) represented the USGS at the North East Mapping Organization (NEMO) 13th annual conference which was held at Wellesley College on June 3-4. This gathering of cartographers, academics, map/data librarians, and map collectors featured numerous lectures. Dennis O'Brien, a freelance cartographer who got his start in archaeology, presented "How to Build a Better Map." Among his accomplishments are an exhibit on navigation at Mystic Seaport and a Connecticut College campus map designed using aerial photographs. Another presentation focused on extensive plans for the Harvard GeoSpatial Data LIboratory. (The capitalized LI is deliberate to recognize a function that is both library and laboratory.) Dr. Harm de Blij, (formerly the ABC News world geographer) who has written numerous geography textbooks, gave the evening lecture on the significance of geography. He spoke about cartographic indicators of potential trouble areas of the world and about the geography of wine (appropriate as many in the group sipped red or white stuff). Dr. Anne Knowles spoke on the personal and public meaning of historical Wellesley campus maps. A tour of the Babson Globe was given along with a guided tour of maps and artifacts at the Natick Historical Society.
