Peter Barnes and Sea Grant Knauss Fellow Jennifer Rahn of CMGP are working with the Geologic Resources Division of the National Park Service in Denver and the Geological Society of America to organize a "Geology of Coastal Ecosystems Workshop (GCEW)." The workshop, expected to have about 100 participants, will take place September 8-10, at Ocean City, MD, and at nearby Assateague Island National Seashore. The workshop goal is to make connections between resource management issues and research, geology and ecosystems, and park staff and external sources of expertise and knowledge.

The NPS is seeking participation from all 50+ coastal parks across the United States, including the Great Lakes. GSA is seeking participation from its membership and from students. CMGP has participation from all three centers, as well as from BRD and WRD. Also being solicited is the perspective of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, NOAA, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and state geologists.

Tom Casadevall has agreed to present a keynote speech. Bob Halley will hold forth after the workshop dinner on his recent adventures among the corals of Navassa Island in the Caribbean-an almost certain new reserve/park. It should be a lively and interesting workshop.

For more information, contact Peter Barnes, pbarnes@usgs.gov, telephone: 560-329-5265 or Jennifer Rahn, jrahn@usgs.gov, telephone: 703-648-6739.
