Coastal Sediments '99 Meeting
The Coastal and Marine Program was well represented at the 4th International Conference on Coastal Engineering and Coastal Sediment Processes, held June 20-24 on Long Island, NY. Of the 182 posters and papers presented at the conference, 12 were presented by people from our three Coastal and Marine Centers. Presenters were: Ann Gibbs, Cheryl Hapke, Monty Hampton, Jeff List, Bill Schwab, Kurt Hanson, Guy Gelfenbaum, John Brock, Walter Barnhardt, Karen Morgan, and Abby Sallenger. Jeff Williams (Reston) was on the organizing committee. Coastal & Marine displays attracted considerable attention. Tommy O'Brien, Bill Danforth, and Bill Schwab demonstrated seafloor mapping technology and results. Laura Friedrich distributed fact sheets and set up displays describing the overall Coastal & Marine Program, and Hilary Stockdon and Karen Morgan arranged the 10-m-long, 4-m-high LIDAR display showing coastal change on the West Coast during the 1997-98 El Ni–o. COASTAL SEDIMENTS is a major meeting attracting geologists, engineers, physicists, and oceanographers from around the world. The focus is on coastal change, sediment transport, wave and current physics, coastal geomorphology, and other coastal issues. About 350 people participated in the meeting and all sessions, even at the end, were very well attended. The format was designed to allow for considerable discussion, which was realized for nearly every paper presented. As co-chairs of COASTAL SEDIMENTS '99 and earlier conferences, Nick Kraus (Army COE) and Bill McDougal (Oregon State) have built COASTAL SEDIMENTS into a major event. For the next meeting, they have decided to remain on the organizing committee but to pass the chair baton to Skip Davis (Department of Geology, USF-Tampa) and Abby Sallenger (SPFC).The organizing committee has decided that COASTAL SEDIMENTS '03 will be held in the St. Petersburg, Florida, area.
