Monty Hampton talks to visitors
Monty Hampton talks to visitors at CMG's Coastal Zone '99.
Numerous CMG Program members and cooperators contributed to a highly successful USGS showing at this year's Coastal Zone '99 Conference. Held in San Diego from July 24-30, the Conference drew coastal-zone managers and planners and representatives of government agencies and academic institutions from around the world. A USGS booth about the CMG Program, coordinated by Monty Hampton and Helen Gibbons, displayed mini-posters about six of the program's coastal-zone projects, as well as information sheets, CD-ROMs, and postcards featuring many more. Running continuously were videotapes (A Nation's Edge, At Ocean's Edge, and Critical Juncture) made for the program by Steve Wessells (GD, Vancouver, Wash.). CMG participants in the conference included Monty, Helen, Mike Carr, Bruce Richmond, and Kristin Brown (MPFC), Brad Butman and Bill Schwab (WHFC), and Jeff Williams (Reston). Bill and Brad gave talks at a session chaired by Monty, and Kristin presented a scientific poster. CMG cooperators at the conference included Dave Cacchione and Ken Israel (both formerly of CMG, Western Region), David Jones (British Geological Survey), Ebitari Isoun (University of Hawaii), George Kaminsky (Washington State Department of Ecology), and Charles Fletcher (University of Hawaii), who kindly oversaw printing of coastal erosion pamphlets distributed at our booth.

Many CMG folks who did not attend the conference also made contributions. Pete Dartnell, Jim Gardner, Guy Gelfenbaum, Herman Karl (MPFC), Jack Kindinger, Laura Lacy, Chˇrie Hulsman-Reid (SPFC), Rich Signell, Jason Hyatt, and Page Valentine (WHFC) provided a variety of materials, including photographs, information sheets, and mini-posters. Chris Gutmacher (MPFC) sent a box of GLORIA atlas CD-ROMs (which went like hotcakes). Diana Collins and Anne Gartner (MPFC) fielded last-minute requests for materials to be tracked down and shipped to the conference.

All in all it was a great success, with many potential customers and cooperators being exposed to information about our work and a number of promising contacts being established. Thanks to all who contributed!
