The National Academy of Sciences/NRC committee that reviewed the USGS
Coastal and Marine Geology Program gave their report to the Woods Hole
Field Center on August 5th. Jim Coleman presented a summary of the report
(having given a similar briefing to Reston in July). Other members of the
committee present to help answer questions were Susan Humphris and Neil
Opdyke. Dan Walker, staff scientist at NAS who coordinated the report,
also attended the review as well as Jeff Williams, Coastal and Marine
Program Coordinator from Reston. Approximately 60 people attended the
review and posed many questions during the two-hour session.
The report in general gave high marks to the Coastal and Marine Program
for its past studies. The report also included some solid recommendations
for focusing future coastal and marine work within the context of level
funding. The full report will be published and distributed soon and
presentations are planned for the St. Pete and Menlo Park teams in early fall.
