On December 1, William (Bill) S. Pfancuff, the Deputy Chief Information Officer of the Department of the Interior, visited the WHFC to assess the center's Y2K preparedness. Lester North and Tom Aldrich briefed Bill on preparations in Woods Hole, reviewed the center's "Day One Plan" with him, and gave him a tour of the center and the Woods Hole research community. Bill's view of government Y2K preparedness is that it is fundamentally important that government keep operating dependably, as a center of certainty for its citizens, despite whatever else may or may not happen as the year turns. Bill deemed the WHFC to be adequately prepared.

On December 14, Stephanie Fawcett, Director of the Records Management Program at National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), Waltham, visited Nancy Soderberg (Data Library/Archive) and attended the WHFC monthly meeting to learn more about our research and program history. In the afternoon she briefed Nancy, Tom Aldrich, Ardis Greatorex, Debbie Hutchinson, and Jim Robb on NARA's new Targeted Assistance Program to train and assist federal agencies in preparing appropriate documents/material for submission to the records center and archive, thereby preserving historical materials of the agency. A participation plan will be developed to use the Program effectively to bring together documents describing the activities of the center, its research and personnel. It is hoped that these efforts will establish stages and transitions in marine geological research as the program, technology, and public mandate change.
