On February 1st, the Virginia Museum of Natural History Foundation awarded its prestigious Thomas Jefferson Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Natural Science jointly to two USGS scientists and an investigator from Virginia. C. Wylie Poag, Coastal and Marine Geology (GD); David S. Powars, Virginia District (WRD); and T. Scott Bruce, Department of Environmental Quality (Commonwealth of Virginia) share the award. The award recognizes the combined efforts of these three persons to map, elucidate, and bring to public awareness the story of the Chesapeake Bay meteorite impact structure. This 55-Ma geologic feature, which underlies the southern part of Chesapeake Bay and the peninsulas of southeastern Virginia, has profoundly altered the subsurface geology as well as the local and regional groundwater supplies. Congratulations Wylie, David, and Scott!
