Terry Edgar received the Professor Hans Pettersson Memorial Bronze Medal from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in January in recognition of his work in the spirit of Hans Pettersson. Pettersson was the leader of the Swedish Deep Sea Expedition of 1947-48. This expedition was the first to utilize the Kullenburg piston core, co-designed by Pettersson. The piston core recovered sediments up 30 m long-an order of magnitude longer than could be recovered previously. Terry was engaged in the early stages of the Deep Sea Drilling Project at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and was awarded the Bronze Medal for his involvement in the project that again permitted a major step forward in depth of recovery of deep-sea sediment. Through rotary coring in the deep ocean, cores could be recovered from thousands of feet below the sea floor.

Part of the citation reads:

"In commemoration of these (Hans Pettersson's) achievements, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences organized a conference in August 1997 -- 'In the Wake of the Swedish Deep Sea Expedition: Development of Paleoceanography as a New Field of Science' and had a medal made in honor of Hans Pettersson. The front of the medal shows a portrait of Hans Pettersson, the back the four-masted schooner Albatross, which served as the expedition ship. The first Pettersson Medal in gold was awarded to Professor Gustaf Arrhenius of Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1997. It was decided that additional medal copies in bronze should be distributed to scientists working in the spirit of Hans Pettersson."
