Recently, Pat Chavez (Flagstaff), Mike Field and Susie Cochran (Santa Cruz) attended the Sixth International
Conference on Remote Sensing for Marine and Coastal Environments
in Charleston, SC where they presented some of the work from the
USGS Coral Reef Project. The Flagstaff group (also including JoAnne Isbrecht, Stuart Sides, Deborah
Soltesz, and Miguel Velasco) put together an eye-popping poster entitled "Use of airborne SHOALS
Lidar bathymetry and digitized aerial photographs for coral reef mapping and analysis at Moloka'i, Hawai'i."
The poster outlines the procedures used for combining aerial photography and LIDAR data to create
digital-image maps of Moloka'i. Conference attendees had a great time viewing some of the images
with 3-D glasses, leaving no wonder that the poster took First Place in its session. Another poster put
together by Susie and Mike, outlining some of the ongoing coral reef work on Moloka'i, received an
Honorable Mention in the same session.
