The Annual Blacks in Government National Training Conference was held in Washington, DC, from August 21st-25th. Blacks In Government (BIG) is a non-profit, non-partisan, professional development association that represents more than 2.5 million African-Americans employed in Federal, State and local governments. The theme for this year's gathering was "World Class Performance Through Partnerships for Progress." This year's conference included workshops on "Information Technology," "Career Development," and "Personal Performance, Productivity, Management and Leadership Skills" among others.

Some of the noted guest speakers were: Assistant Secretary for Health and Surgeon General David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D.; Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management Janice R. Lachance; Representative Jesse L. Jackson, Jr., 106th Congress; and Martin L. King, Jr., III. The Department of Interior participated with a one-day forum to discuss topics of interest about the various directories under its umbrella. Representing the U.S. Geological Survey were: W. Terry Carr (Menlo Park), Glynn Williams (WHFC) and Larry Togans (Reston).
