The geochemistry group at the Woods Hole Field Center hosted a summer laboratory assistant and hired a high school student and contractor. Cara Smith, a student from Wesleyan University, worked with the geochemistry group this summer. She became well versed in spreadsheet and plotting techniques, which boosted her computer experience for school. Cara was also instrumental in processing sediment samples for metals and carbon analysis as well as in gamma counting from Marilyn ten Brink and Ellen Mecray's (WHFC) work on Long Island Sound.

Mario Santos began his high school student appointment in June. Mario is supervised by Ellen Mecray and works on all aspects of the geochemistry projects at the WHFC. He has participated in cruises with Mike Bothner and Michael Casso of the Boston Harbor group; processed sediment cores for metals, carbon, and gamma analysis for the Long Island Sound, New York Bight, and Boston Harbor projects; and worked on spreadsheets for Marilyn ten Brink. We look forward to having Mario working with us in the upcoming years after school and during the summers.

The geochemistry group also welcomes Jenna Munson to laboratory assistant duties under the Environmental Careers Organization assistantship. Jenna joins us from the University of Minnesota at Duluth where she earned a B.S. in geology with a minor in mathematics. Before arriving in Woods Hole, Jenna was a research assistant at the Large Lakes Observatory where she collected sediment cores and processed water and sediment samples for ICP-MS analysis. Jenna will be supervised by Ellen Mecray and will assist in geochemistry projects of Mike Bothner, Marilyn ten Brink, Steve Colman, and John Bratton. Jenna will also head laboratory carbon analysis.
