Leadership Meeting on Scientific Research
A Geologic Division Leadership Meeting on scientific research was held at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, University of California at Santa Cruz on September 12th-14th. Debbie Hutchinson, Lisa Robbins, and Mike Carr (Coastal and Marine Geology Team Chief Scientists) were present and John Haines (Acting Program Coordinator, Reston) made a presentation. Science within the Coastal and Marine Program was well represented at the meeting. Rob Thieler (WHFC) gave a talk on "Understanding and Predicting the Evolution of the Coast and Inner Continental Shelf." Richie Williams (WHFC) spoke on "USGS: Current Challenges and Future Opportunities," and Keith Kvenvolden (Menlo Park) addressed "A Scientist's Research Career in the U.S. Geological Survey." During a half-day field trip to the Monterey Bay marine research institutions, field trip leaders Steve Eittrem, Terry Bruns, and Bruce Richmond (Menlo Park) gave presentations on "Offshore Geology South of the Monterey Canyon" at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories of California State University. The meeting was also attended by USGS Director Chip Groat, Regional Chief Geologists Bonnie McGregor, Tom Casadevall, and Doug Buffington, the Chief Scientist for Hydrology Mary Jo Baedecker, Ron Oremland from the National Research Program, and other scientists and managers.
