Two Long-Time Coastal and Marine Geologists Retire

On September 28th, colleagues and friends held a lunch celebration for Mike Marlow and Paul Carlson, who retired at the end of the fiscal year.

We had plenty of pizza, soda, and beer at a local pizza place. These two geologists extraordinaires—with long and illustrious histories in the Coastal and Marine, Marine Geology, Pacific-Arctic Marine Geology Teams/Branches—seemed to enjoy the fÉting, reminiscing, and ribbing by the assembled crowd. Alan Cooper, Dave Scholl, Tau Alpha, Gretchen Luepke, Paula Quinterno, Terry Bruns, Mike Carr, and others provided stories, praise, and perspectives on the two scientists' accomplishments and bravado in the Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska, San Francisco, South Pacific, the volleyball court, and elsewhere during their time with Marine Geology.

Our research depth and pool of knowledge about Alaska dropped two big notches as Mike and Paul moved on. Words of wisdom and farewell can still be passed along to these two colleagues via e-mail. Paul will be continuing as Emeritus with the CMG Program working with the Biological Resources Division (BRD) and the National Park Service on geology in Glacier Bay, Alaska.
