Erika Hammar-Klose, Jenna Hill, Andrew Fox, and Ben Gutierrez (WHFC) recently made a GIS presentation to an 8th-grade science class at the Lawrence School in Falmouth, MA. After Erika gave an overall view of GIS to the class, the students were divided into two groups. One group went outdoors with Ben and Andrew to see the live interaction between GPS and GIS. Ben and Andrew had a Garmin GPS system hooked up to a laptop running ArcView and plotted their position on an aerial photo of the playground as they walked around with the students. This simulates our work at sea where we use mapped sidescan-sonar imagery as the backdrop for the GIS. The other half of the class remained indoors with Erika and Jenna to learn more about different types of maps and to locate their homes on aerial photographs of the Falmouth area.

In addition to mapping activities, information packets were given to the teacher to share with other teachers and classes. The students and teacher were very enthusiastic about the visit and have asked the WHFC to repeat the presentation to the rest of the 8th-grade science classes in Lawrence School. The GIS group looks forward to fulfilling that request and perhaps to making this a yearly visit.
