Rich's cake: "X" marks his destination, La Spezia, Italy.

Rich Signell (WHFC) has begun a three-year sabbatical with NATO at the Undersea Research Center in La Spezia, Italy, where he will be working on methods for assimilating real-time data into numerical models to improve predictions, an important and rapidly growing field. He will be back in Massachusetts Bay and the Gulf of Maine on a research cruise next summer conducting tests in cooperation with Harvard University. (The Gulf of Maine, it turns out, is a great location for testing numerical models.)

Rich may also continue to participate in the USGS sediment-transport initiative. During his 10 years at USGS, Rich has made major contributions to the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program with models of coastal circulation and transport, data visualization, data distribution, and data analysis. His insight, mastery of analysis and presentation, and good humor will be missed. We expect him to return in 2004 with new skills and new perspectives, as well as new recipes! He can be reached by email at his USGS address, or at signell@saclante.nato.int.
