Research in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Brings Honor to USGSCollection of Resulting Reports to be Published in Summer 2001
The USGS has received the 2001 Sanctuary Reflections Award for the "Organization" category, presented by the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The annual awards recognize scientists, local officials, educators, citizens, and organizations for their past efforts on behalf of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and for their continued involvement in its conservation and preservation. The USGS is being recognized for its scientific studies of the sanctuaryincluding mapping, sea otter research, shoreline monitoring, sediment sampling, and studies of ocean currents, water resources, landslides, coastal watersheds, sea-cliff erosion, and the effects of the 1997-98 El Niño. The award will be presented on March 17th in Monterey during the annual Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Symposium. Some major players in the research that won the Sanctuary Reflections Award are the scientists in the CMG Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary project. After the usual period of gestation, reports of the scientific investigations by this team are now complete and heading for publication this summer as a special issue of the journal, Marine Geology. The volume consists of a diverse group of papers on a wide range of topics, including seafloor geology and morphology, sedimentation processes, hydrocarbons and seafloor seeps, foraminiferal environments, circulation, and histories of beach and shoreline erosion and accretion.
