St. Petersburg Field Center Celebrates Community Earth Day
Tampa/St. Petersburg Earth Day events this year were held on April 22nd at the Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa. As always, the St. Petersburg Field Center had several energetic volunteers to share science with their local community. Exhibits included displays on African dust storms and impacts on coral reefs, the hydrology and geology of the Floridan Aquifer, the tornado simulator, and a separate coloring table for the children. New this year for outreach, the coloring table provided children with pictures that addressed different areas of science, for example, erosion, beaches, coral reefs, mountains, ocean creatures, rivers, mapping, etc. Special thanks to our Center Chief Lisa Robbins and her three daughters, Casey, Sarah, and Lindsey, for their efforts in making the new hands-on coloring table enjoyable for other kids. A special thanks also to volunteers, Ivy Muntz, Laurinda Frye, Dale Griffin, Noreen Purcell, Mike Stallings, and Nancy DeWitt for representing the USGS at Earth Day 2001.
