The St. Petersburg Field Center (SPFC) was pleased to participate for the second year in the Florida Oceans Day 2001 exhibit held at the State Capitol Rotunda in Tallahassee on April 5th. The Oceans Day exhibit is an opportunity for State universities with marine science departments and for other institutions involved in the marine sciences to promote marine research, education, and commerce issues concerning Florida's coastline.

The Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO), housed on the University of South Florida (USF) campus in St. Petersburg, and the Florida Ocean Alliance host the event. Because of its close ties with the USF College of Marine Science and FIO, the USGS was invited to participate as a Federal partner in the State effort. John Ogden and FIO members assisted in the logistics of the day. Laurinda Frye and Betsy Boynton (SPFC) provided graphics for the exhibit. Don Hickey (SPFC) contributed coral samples for display. Helen Gibbons from the Menlo Park Field Center contributed Coastal and Marine Geology Program postcards for distribution.

Lisa Robbins and Dennis Krohn represented the SPFC. Jane Eggleston from the Tallahassee WRD office joined our group to provide hydrology expertise on coastal issues. Approximately 300 people ranging from tourists and teachers to aides to legislators and lobbyists visited the USGS booth. Visitors were interested in the types of research conducted at the SPFC, and several Tallahassee-based reporters stopped by to inquire about Center activities. The exhibit was followed by a delicious seafood reception for legislators and participants that was sponsored by the Mote Marine Laboratory.
