The hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis alleganiensis) often crawls along the stream bottom unnoticed, but to fishermen that frequent the smaller-more pristine streams of the Tennessee Valley, the “waterdog” or “grampus” is no surprise to a tangled fishing line. The hellbender is North America’s largest salamander, reaching lengths of nearly 30 inches.
