Ground water in the Great Lakes Basin: the case of southeastern Wisconsin

The southeastern Wisconsin case study illustrates the principles governing the connection of ground water and the Great Lakes. The study area includes the growing city of Waukesha, which is west of the Great Lakes Basin divide, and the older city of Milwaukee which is east of the divide and on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Introductory information includes some background on the setting for the ground-water flow system in southeastern Wisconsin and also information on the technique we use to simulate this system, called ground-water modeling.

The model allows a close look at the ground-water flow system and its relation to surface water. Here are the elements of the natural flow system under study:
