Ours is a big country, and it takes a lot of maps to show it all. Fortunately, finding the right topographic map just got easier: the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) announces that lists of its extensive selection of topographic maps are now available on the World Wide Web.

The USGS publishes nearly 70,000 topographic map sheets covering all parts of the United States at various levels of detail. Long popular with generations of Girl and Boy Scouts, hikers, campers, hunters, and other outdoor enthusiasts, as well as civil engineers, urban planners, and other business people, these maps are available for purchase from the USGS and from its many business partners located throughout the United States.

The online map lists provide the stock numbers and identifying data needed to purchase USGS topographic maps. The online site includes a search capability for finding maps by name even when the exact spelling is not known, or by giving latitude and longitude.

To see these listings of USGS topographic maps online, point a World Wide Web browser at the following address:

The USGS online site presents the same information contained in paper State Map Lists, which are available from any USGS Earth Science Information Center or through a toll-free telephone request to 1-800-USA- MAPS.

The USGS serves the nation by providing reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and enhance and protect our quality of life.
