Sunny Skies Prevail for Race at USGS Open House

Blue skies and gentle breezes prevailed for the 5k race and 2k fun run that kicked off Open House at the U.S. Geological Survey, Sat., April 25, 1998.

Andrew Crook of Boulder, Colo., won the race with a time of 15 minutes, 45 seconds. The first female winner was Laurie Simcox, who finished in 18 minutes and 34 seconds.

Male and female age group winners were:

14 and under: Chris Furlong (m), Dana Dabberingno (f)
15-19: Atif Aftab (m), Abigail Reaser (f)
20-24: David Haffner (m), Adriana Castro (f)
25-29: Warren Kohm (m), Jennifer Foster (f)
30-34: Neil McLaughlin (m), Joann Burns (f)
35-39: Mark Walley (m), Sue Nevrath (f)
40-44: Brian Grzelak (m), Sandy Rice (f)
45-49: Larry Yarger (m), Dina Ann Scheurer (f)
50-54: Paul Zink (m), Joyce Weinstein (f)
55-59: Steven Forman (m), Janet Newburgh (f)
60-69: Jerry Lewis (m), Marjorie Lane (f)
70 and over: Wilfred Burr (m), Ramah Camenzend (f)

The winners of the Team Competition were:

Government: Emerging Geologists Group (EGG) of USGS
Open Female: GrayInk
Open Female: GrayInk

Tony Divas, age 10, finished first in the 2k Fun Run. The following grade schools had the largest number of participants in the 2k fun run: Ujamaa, Sunset Hills, and Dogwood.

A total of 477 runners finished the 5k race and 139 took part in the 2k fun run.
