WASHINGTON — On Wednesday, July 12, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne will fly over Mount St. Helens to view the ongoing volcanic eruption. His flyover will offer him the opportunity to see the extent of devastation caused by the catastrophic eruption on May 18, 1980 and new dome-building activities in the Mount St. Helens crater. The overflight also will enable him to view other nearby Cascade Range volcanoes and to discuss their potential hazards to communities and to aviation with an onboard USGS volcanologist. A wire service correspondent and photographer will accompany Secretary Kempthorne on the flight and provide coverage for news organizations.

After his overflight, the Secretary will be briefed by scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey´s Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) on monitoring active volcanoes, the benefits of volcanic research, communicating hazards information to public officials and the public and the Volcano Disaster Assistance Teams recent participation in the Merapi Volcano crisis in Indonesia.

Following his briefing, Secretary Kempthorne will hold a briefing for local media.
