Land managers and scientists from federal, state, university and nongovernmental organizations will discuss issues, research and management of the desert tortoise in the southwestern deserts in 61 presentations.


Desert Tortoise Council’s 32nd Annual Symposium.


•      Recovery planning and efforts to stabilize tortoise populations; head-starting.

•      Monitoring tortoise populations and habitat; new techniques, including use of dogs to   hunt tortoises.

•      Threats to tortoises, including fire, alien plants, disease, and development.

•      New data on tortoise ecology, behavior, home range use, burrows, and foraging habits.

•      A special session on Gila monsters, chaired by Dr. Dan Beck, author of a new book on the species.

•      Featured papers on Bolson tortoises, tortoises of the Namib Desert, and turtles of Malaysia.


The Desert Tortoise Council symposium will be held in Las Vegas, Nev. at Sam’s Town, 5111 Boulder Highway.


February 23–26, 2007. Sessions will begin Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. and last until 5 p.m., followed by a social mixer. Saturday sessions, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; social mixer and buffet at 6:30 p.m., followed by featured evening speaker and awards. Sunday sessions, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
