Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey’s Cascades Volcano Observatory are installing eight new monitoring stations this week on Newberry Volcano in central Oregon’s Deschutes National Forest.

What: Photo and interview opportunity as USGS CVO scientists install monitoring equipment on Newberry Volcano.

When: Tuesday, August 23, 2011, 9:30 a.m. PDT

Where: Meet at Lava Lands Visitor Center in Newberry National Volcanic Monument to be escorted to the field site. Installation site is approximately a 20-minute drive from the visitor center on a gravel road.

Directions: Lava Lands Visitor Center, 58201 South Hwy. 97, Bend, OR

From Bend, OR: travel south on Highway 97 from the Downtown/Revere Rd. Exit 137 for 11.2 miles.

From Sunriver, OR: travel north from the Sunriver/S. Century Drive Exit 153 on Highway 97 past Lava Lands Visitor Center 8.3 miles to Baker/ Knott Rd. Exit 143. Return to Lava Lands by travelling approximately 6 miles south on Highway 97 from Exit 143.
