MONOCACY RIVER - NEW ALL TIME HIGH BREAKS HURRICANE AGNES RECORD

MONOCACY RIVER NEAR BRIDGEPORT , MD. - A NEW ALL TIME HIGH RECORD OF ABOUT 17.4 BILLION GALLONS PER DAY (BGD) WAS SET OVERNIGHT, EXCEEDING THE RECORD SET BY RAINS FROM HURRICANE AGNES IN JUNE 1972 (13.7 BGD) BY MORE THAN 25 PERCENT.

POTOMAC RIVER FLOW

POTOMAC RIVER FLOW WAS ABOUT 42.5 BGD AT 7 A.M., THURS., JUNE 20, 1996, NEAR WASHINGTON, D.C., MORE THAN 8 TIMES HIGHER THAN THE AVERAGE FLOW FOR JUNE OF 5 BGD.

POTOMAC RIVER FLOW HAS BEEN NORMAL OR ABOVE NORMAL THROUGHOUT 1996.

CHESAPEAKE BAY

The high freshwater inflow to the Chesapeake Bay has an impact in the form of increased amounts of nutrients and sediment. More nutrients may lead to more algal blooms and decreased aquatic vegetation, thereby decreasing the habitat for crabs and the food source for ducks and geese.
