From coastal erosion to measuring the storm surge and flooding as well as providing maps of affected areas, the U.S. Geological Survey is gearing up to provide information on Hurricane Fran as the storm develops, including real-time data, from its offices in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. On the World Wide Web, enter http://www.usgs.gov, click on the water drop icon, scroll down to and click on USGS Water Resources Sites of Regional and State Offices, then scroll down to the U.S. map and click on the state that you need.

For more information, including maps of affected areas, reporters may call the USGS Outreach/Public Affairs Office at (703) 648-4460.

USGS water data are used by the NOAA/National Weather Service for issuing flood warnings and forecasts. The data are also used by Federal Emergency Management Agency and state and local emergency management organizations in providing flood relief assistance.

The USGS serves the nation by providing reliable scientific information to describe and understand the Earth; minimize loss of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological, energy, and mineral resources; and enhance and protect our quality of life.
