A preliminary magnitude 6.5 earthquake occurred in northern Peru on Tues., Oct. 28, 1997, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake occurred in northern Peru, about 550 miles north of Lima at 1:15 a.m. local time in Peru (EST time of occurrence is the same). The earthquake occurred in a sparsely populated, jungle area. A similar magnitude earthquake occurred in this area in May, 1995. In 1950, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred in this area.
